Understanding Sciatica and How Physical Therapy Can Help

John Son • August 3, 2023

Sciatica is a health condition characterized by a sharp pain that travels through the sciatic nerve, starting from the lower back, through the hips, and down each leg. It usually affects one side of the body and can be extremely painful. At Rosedale Wellness Centre, we understand the debilitating effects of this condition and are here to help you manage and potentially alleviate them.

Identifying the Symptoms of Sciatica

It's crucial to identify sciatica early to prevent worsening of symptoms, exacerbating the condition. The most common signs include severe pain in the lower back and legs, weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the foot or leg, and constant tingling or burning sensation down one leg. If you are experiencing any of these, it's essential that you seek professional help promptly.

Physiotherapy for Sciatica

Physical Therapy is a highly effective form of treatment for sciatica. At Rosedale Wellness Centre, our team of specialists will evaluate your condition and create a customized plan to address your unique needs. This could include exercises to strengthen the muscles supporting the back, enhance posture, improve flexibility, and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Other Treatment Options at Rosedale Wellness Centre

Besides physiotherapy, we offer a range of other therapeutic services that can help manage sciatica, such as Chiropractic care and Massage Therapy. Chiropractic adjustments can realign the spine, improving its function and alleviating nerve irritability. Similarly, Massage provides relief by loosening tight lower back muscles that can place stress on your nerve roots.

Long-term Lifestyle Changes

Our approach at Rosedale wellness centre is not just about treating the symptoms, but also addressing the root causes and promoting healthier lifestyle choices. These may involve daily exercises, ergonomic instructions for home and work settings, and guidance to correct movements in your everyday life that may cause you pain.
