  • Heat vs. Cold: Which Is Better for Pain Relief?

When you’re dealing with pain, whether it’s a sudden injury or a long-standing ache, one of the most common questions is: Should I use ice or heat? At Rosedale Wellness Centre, our team of physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, and other practitioners hear this almost daily. The answer isn’t always one-size-fits-all — but with a few simple guidelines, you can make the right choice and feel better faster.

    What Is A Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles, or tendons.

This compression disrupts the nerve’s function and can result in pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. While it can happen anywhere in the body, the most commonly affected areas are:

    • Neck (Cervical Spine) – Can cause radiating pain into the shoulders and arms
    • Lower Back (Lumbar Spine) – Often results in sciatica, shooting pain down the leg
    • Wrist (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) – Tingling and weakness in the hand
    • Elbow (Ulnar Nerve Entrapment) – Numbness in the ring and pinky fingers

    What Are The Causes?

Several factors can contribute to the compression of nerves:

    • Posture (especially while sitting or sleeping)
    • Repetitive motion injuries from work or sports Herniated discs in the spine
    • Arthritis or bone spurs
    • Trauma or injury
    • Obesity, which adds pressure to joints and nerves
    • Pregnancy, due to fluid retention and weight changes

Over time, chronic compression can lead to permanent nerve damage, so early diagnosis and treatment are essential.

    • Sharp, aching, or burning pain Tingling sensations (“pins and needles”)
    • Muscle weakness in the affected area
    • A feeling that a foot or hand has “fallen asleep”
    • Pain that worsens with certain movements

These symptoms can come and go or persist continuously. If you notice them lasting for more than a few days, it’s time to seek help.
