What Is A Pinched Nerve?
A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles, or tendons.
This compression disrupts the nerve’s function and can result in pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. While it can happen anywhere in the body, the most commonly affected areas are:
- Neck (Cervical Spine) – Can cause radiating pain into the shoulders and arms
- Lower Back (Lumbar Spine) – Often results in sciatica, shooting pain down the leg
- Wrist (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) – Tingling and weakness in the hand
- Elbow (Ulnar Nerve Entrapment) – Numbness in the ring and pinky fingers
What Are The Causes?
Several factors can contribute to the compression of nerves:
- Posture (especially while sitting or sleeping)
- Repetitive motion injuries from work or sports Herniated discs in the spine
- Arthritis or bone spurs
- Trauma or injury
- Obesity, which adds pressure to joints and nerves
- Pregnancy, due to fluid retention and weight changes
Over time, chronic compression can lead to permanent nerve damage, so early diagnosis and treatment are essential.
Common Symptoms
The symptoms of a pinched nerve may vary depending on the location and severity of the compression, but here are the most common signs:
- Sharp, aching, or burning pain Tingling sensations (“pins and needles”)
- Muscle weakness in the affected area
- A feeling that a foot or hand has “fallen asleep”
- Pain that worsens with certain movements
These symptoms can come and go or persist continuously. If you notice them lasting for more than a few days, it’s time to seek help.
Manual therapy and massage to relieve tension in surrounding tissues
Acupuncture to stimulate nerve healing and reduce inflammation
Lifestyle advice to improve posture, ergonomics, and activity patterns
In severe cases, we may refer patients for imaging or medical consultations, but most pinched nerves can be treated effectively without surgery.
