Breaking These Myths About Chiropractic Care Once and for All!

rosedalewellness • June 10, 2022

Most people have heard of chiropractors. Unfortunately, most people have heard the many myths and misconceptions about chiropractors, as well.

Since a lot of misinformation exists around chiropractic care, and how and when it can be beneficial, it is important to understand the truth behind the myths. By learning more about this form of alternative medicine you can make an informed decision as to whether it’s right for you.

At Rosedale Wellness Centre, we are here to help you understand the treatment options available and all the factors that go into deciding if you can benefit from chiropractic care.

What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors use non-invasive, hands-on techniques to alleviate pain and diagnose and treat issues that affect your body’s movement. Chiropractic care focuses on your spine, muscles, joints, and nervous system to reduce pain, restore range of motion, and ease discomfort.

When it comes to issues with your musculoskeletal system, a chiropractor can provide relief that doesn’t involve invasive surgery or prescribing medication. Licensed chiropractors use their hands or special instruments to manipulate or adjust joints in your body in a controlled manner, improving your body’s range of motion and physical function.

Chiropractors provide a holistic treatment, which means they consider the overall state of the body rather than just the specific ache or pain. Working with a chiropractor can help you understand the causes of your pain, discomfort, or mobility issues and work towards solutions that help you feel your best.

Myth 1: Chiropractors are not real doctors

A common question we hear a lot is, “are chiropractors doctors?” The answer is that while chiropractors do not hold MDs, they do graduate with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This enables them to use the title “doctor” when providing patient care.

In Ontario, chiropractors are regulated by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario (CCO) under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. This means that they must meet the standards of the CCO to practice, which includes graduation from an accredited chiropractic college and a requirement to participate in life-long learning as part of being a member of a self-regulated health profession.

Myth 2: Joint manipulations are painful

Many people are under the mistaken impression that visiting a chiropractor for joint manipulation is a painful experience. While that may seem like the case due to the name, the opposite is true. There is little to no pain with joint adjustments or manipulations. In fact, you are likely to feel relief from your pain following an adjustment.

This is because a chiropractic adjustment is designed to provide realignment to your body. This helps improve your posture and physical function. Many patients report a sense of relief, calmness, and improved mobility after their appointment.

In general, if you weren’t in pain before visiting the chiropractor, you won’t be in pain after. In some cases, if you have recent trauma in the area, such as swelling or inflammation, you may feel minor discomfort.

Joint manipulations and adjustments are safe when performed by a licensed and trained chiropractor. However, it is very dangerous to perform these treatments if you are not skilled and licensed to do so.

Myth 3: Chiropractors can only help with back pain

There are many benefits to chiropractic adjustments besides helping with back pain. A chiropractor can treat many conditions that affect the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. This includes issues involving muscle, bone, or joint pain or dysfunction.

Chiropractic benefits numerous conditions, including:

  • Lower back pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Repetitive strain
  • Arthritic pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Arm and shoulder pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Leg and hip pain
  • And much more
